The San Francisco Board of Supervisors recently voted to dramatically reduce the number of animal products served in jails and hospitals citywide. The law—sponsored by supervisors Sandra Lee Fewer and Rafael Mandelman—will require the city jails to slash its purchasing of animal products, including meat, dairy, and eggs, by 50 percent by 2024. At public hospitals, the amount of animal products purchased must be reduced by 15 percent by 2023.
The move comes after a coalition of animal-rights groups pushed for the local government to divest from environmentally damaging meat, egg, and dairy industries. “Animal agriculture is the next frontier for a rising divestment and defunding movement towards a more compassionate and sustainable world,” said Victoria Gu, a volunteer at Compassionate Bay, one of the groups working to pass the law.
